Charles Lloyd was born in 1938 in Memphis. He started playing saxophone when he was nine. He mastered the instrument quickly and when still a teenager started performing alongside Georg Coleman, Frank Strozier and blues groups Howlin Woolf and B.B.King. In 1956 he moved to Los Angeles where he studied music at the University of Southern California and played at jazz clubs with Ornette Coleman, Erik Dolphy, Charlie Haden and Billie Higgins.
Two years later he became the music director of the Chico Hamilton Ensemble and in 1964 he joined Cannonball Adderley Sextet. The turning point in his career came in 1965 when he founded an ensmeble of his own featuring Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette and Cecil McBee. The recordings made at that time (e.g. „Dream Weaver”or „Forest Flower”) achieved cult status straight away and maintain it up to this day. The music played by Lloyd’s quartet combining differents kinds of jazz, including free jazz, wild improvisation and psychedelic rock trance rhythms met expectations of the jazz fans of the day perfectly.
Lloyd’s recordings sold in millions and he himself was invited to collaborate with bands such as The Doors, The Byrds, Aashish. In 1967 „The DownBeat” magazine named him „Jazz Artist of the Year”; he performed a lot in many European countries – this was the year of his sensational performance at Warsaw’s Jazz Jamboree. In the Seventies Lloyd left the jazz scene and performed with the pop group The Beach Boys. He returned in the Eighties performing with the pianist Michel Petrucciani. In 1989 he signed a contract with ECM and albums such as „Canto”, „Voice In The Night”, „The Water Is Wide”, „What Way Is East” followed, praised by critics and jazz fans alike. Since 2015 he’s been Blue Note recording artist. In 2016 he released a studio album „I Long To See You” and during the Krakow concert he will present the works he recorded for this album. It is chiefly improvised music based on traditional American songs such as Abide With Me, All My Trials or Shenanodah. The broad, melodious phrases of Lloyd’s saxophone are a perfect match to the refined hues of Frisell’s guitar and the discreet percussion of Harland. The works are calm and meditative; performed in utmost concentration they seduce the listener with their pastel colours.
